Tudor Pelagos 39: A Dive Watch for Everyday Adventures

A remarkable dive watch

Tudor Pelagos 39, announced with great enthusiasm last year, is a watch that takes the concept of a versatile everyday sports watch and imbues it with the specialized features of the Pelagos series – a line that has epitomized Tudor's prowess in diving watches for a decade. This downsized, somewhat refined version of the Pelagos diver raises questions: Does it pale in comparison to its robust siblings, or does it succeed by catering to a broader audience?

The answer is a resounding yes, it succeeds. Having explored the watch extensively, including its release and comparisons, I can confidently affirm that the Pelagos 39 is a remarkable dive watch. It's practical, well-crafted, appropriately sized, contemporary, understated, and functional – a timepiece that may render others in your collection obsolete. You should consider owning one, and so should I. For the reasons why, read on.

The Essentials

The Pelagos 39 is a titanium dive watch measuring 39mm in width, 11.8mm in thickness, and 47mm lug to lug. It weighs approximately 107g with an unsized bracelet and includes a rubber strap. Currently, it is available in a single specification with a black dial and a brushed grey/black ceramic bezel featuring luminous markers. The watch boasts a sapphire crystal, a water resistance rating of 200 meters, 21mm non-drilled lugs, a screw-down crown, a closed case back, and Tudor's T-Fit micro-adjust system on the titanium bracelet. It is priced at $4,600, a slight increase from its original $4,400 price tag.

The context for understanding the Pelagos 39 is largely shaped by its older siblings – the three versions of the standard Pelagos, all based on a 42mm all-titanium dive watch measuring 14.4mm in thickness and 50mm lug-to-lug. These come in black, blue, or the vintage-inspired LHD variant. The standard Pelagos is a top-tier 500-meter dive watch with a helium escape valve (HeV), a fully-matte finish, and a bracelet featuring a self-adjusting clasp.

Since its initial release in 2012 and its subsequent evolution into the military-focused FXD, the Pelagos has been the flagship of Tudor's dive watch lineup, considered by many to be one of the best dive watches available.

Introducing the Pelagos 39

In August of the previous year, Tudor unveiled the Pelagos 39, maintaining the use of titanium while introducing smaller and more universally appealing dimensions. However, these changes were accompanied by some technical compromises, including reduced water resistance, the absence of a helium escape valve, the removal of the self-adjusting clasp, and a departure from the ultra-matte finish.

Why Create the Pelagos 39?

The Pelagos 39 serves as an extension of the Pelagos line, offering the distinct aesthetic appeal that defined the original while embracing a broader and less male-centric audience. This watch marks a shift from the extreme specificity of diving for a watch that doesn't compromise on its journey to becoming an exceptional everyday dive watch. The standard Pelagos appeals to a niche audience; it might feel oversized, especially in terms of lug-to-lug size and seriousness, to those who are casual divers or non-divers.

For those who rarely dive or not at all, the Pelagos might seem excessive. The Pelagos 39 represents Tudor's casual alternative, blending the characteristics of a conventional dive watch with the essence of a Pelagos. The watch's specifications and sizing do not detract from its diving capabilities, but the compromise renders it less intense than the standard Pelagos. This is precisely the point. If you've ever felt that the Pelagos is excellent yet somewhat excessive, the Pelagos 39 makes perfect sense.

The Pelagos 39 Specs

As a contemporary Tudor creation featuring a no-date configuration, the Pelagos 39 houses the brand's MT5400 automatic movement. This COSC-certified chronometer movement offers a 70-hour power reserve and operates at a rate of 4 Hz. It is backed by a five-year warranty, and it's the same movement found in other Tudor watches, like the beloved Black Bay 925.

To draw a fitting metaphor, the Pelagos 39 can be likened to a "dad (or mom) diver." It's not the high-performance model but one that offers enough capability and appeal for everyday wear, much like a car that's entertaining and powerful without being track-focused.

On the Wrist

For my 17.5mm wrist, the Pelagos 39 is practically perfect. Adjusting the size and T-Fit system may require some fiddling, but it's lightweight, sits comfortably, and looks great on the bracelet, which tapers to 16mm at the clasp. While the included rubber strap is an option, the watch shines on a NATO strap.

The T-Fit system is easy to adjust and provides ample flexibility to accommodate wrist swelling. Although it may not surpass the OG Pelagos clasp, the T-Fit serves its purpose well, especially given the Pelagos 39's shift towards a broader audience and less intense diving focus.

The watch also pairs excellently with various other straps, with the only drawback being the unusual 21mm lug width.
