Panerai has released a new watch called, Radiomir Eilean with the reference number PAM01243 inspired by the classic yacht Eilean having both being launched in 1936.
This is also in occurrence of the Eilean arrival in Portofino during this month (July 2021), should you be fortunate enough to be around the iconic sea town you’ll be spotting the famous sailboat on the waters.
Eilean is a the 22 metres (70 foot) classic ketch belonging to Italian watchmaker Panerai. The sailboat was designed and built in 1936 by William Fife, a third generation yacht designer and builder, famous for having designed two contededer boats participating at the America’s cup. Immediately recognisible in her elegance she was built for the Fulton brothers, Scottish steel merchants. The yacht passed ownership until she was used as a charter business vessel.
In 2006 Angelo Bonati, then the Panerai CEO, spotted the yacht while visiting Antigua in a state of disrepair. Bonati arranged for the yacht to be restored by a shipyard in Italy for few years and she was re-launched in 2009 as part of an advertising campaign for the Panerai brand.
This model pays homage to the first Radiomir, created by Guido Panerai to support marine missions, combined with features that embrace the aesthetic of the William Fife-designed Eilean.
The 45mm watch case is created from matte patina steel and sports distinctly nautical features that superyacht owners and enthusiasts can appreciate.
The face has been designed evoking of Eilean’s teak deck, complete with a dragon engraving on the left side of the case replicating the same emblem that decorates the yacht’s hull. Within the case, the watch hands are consistent with Panerai heritage and the legendary sandwich numerals.
The case back bears an engraving that reads “Eilean 1936” and is identical to the one located on the ship’s boom. It’s complete with a dragon engraving on the left side of the case replicating the same emblem that decorates the yacht’s hull.
The watch strap itself is made from leather produced in Panerai’s place of origin, Tuscany, and is adorned with intricate hand stitching inspired by the lacing found on Eilean’s sails. This stitching also ensures that the strap will endure tough conditions when worn on board the Scamosciato Brown with beige stitching is meant to be heritage of early diving watches with leather straps.
Both the original Radiomir and Eilean, the yacht that became a part of Panerai history, were created in 1936. The Radiomir Eilean honours the underlying bond between these two legends.
